Why Gate Capacity Can Be Less Than Trailer Capacity

When you drive a wheeled vehicle — a lawn mower, ATV, or tractor — up a ramp gate, the machine's weight is distributed between its front and rear axles. Both axles never land on the ramp gate at the same time, so the gate never has to support the full weight of the machine in a single point. The load on the gate at any moment is a fraction of the machine's total weight. This is why a gate rated at 1,500 lb can safely load equipment that weighs more — and why gate capacity and trailer GVWR are two different numbers.

The folding gate is longer — does that change how the trailer handles when towing?

When folded and stored flat on the deck, the folding gate's extra length doesn't add to the trailer's towing footprint. What changes is the folded height — the folding gate lies lower than the standard gate when folded, which reduces aerodynamic drag. It does not extend beyond the trailer length when stored.

Is the HD gate worth the extra weight?

For heavy equipment use, yes. The weight difference is the trade-off for the extra capacity, additional hinge, and heavier tubing. If you're regularly loading equipment at or near 2,500 lbs, the HD gate's higher rating and more robust construction provides a meaningful safety margin. For lighter use — lawn equipment, landscaping, side-by-sides — the standard gate is more than adequate and easier to handle when removing it manually.

What holds the gates open while I'm loading?

All Silver Ox ramp gates use a chain and spring-latch system to hold the gate in the open (ramp) position during loading. The gate rests on its support chains, with the ramp angle determined by chain length. Gates are removed by pulling the hinge bolts that act as pins. The standard and HD gates are single-piece, so the ramp angle is fixed. The folding gate's bi-fold design can be adjusted slightly by how far the lower section is opened.
