How to Install the KTI KWR Wireless Remote β€” All Models (KWR-005, KWR-006, KWR-007, KWR-008)

πŸ“‘
Quick Answer

All KWR models install the same way: mount the receiver away from the motor, route both antennas outside any metal enclosure, connect red wire to the battery positive (or start solenoid), black to the motor ground, plug the HPU connector into the 4-pin or 6-pin port on the pump, power on with the side switch, and test the key fob. For the Bluetooth app: search "KTI KWR Bluetooth App" on the App Store or Google Play, install, grant Bluetooth and Location permissions, scan for your unit, and enter password 123456.

Confirm Your Connector Before Ordering

The KWR-007 uses a 6-pin connector β€” it will not plug into the standard 4-pin port on single-circuit KTI pumps. The KWR-005, KWR-006, and KWR-008 all use the 4-pin connector and are interchangeable from a connector standpoint. If you're not sure which connector your pump has, look at the remote pendant connector on the pump β€” count the pins in the socket.

Part 1 β€” Hardware Installation (All Models)

The installation procedure is identical across KWR-005, KWR-006, KWR-007, and KWR-008. The only difference is which port on the pump you connect to (4-pin vs. 6-pin).

  1. Choose a Mounting Location β€” Away From the Motor

Mount the receiver inside a sealed toolbox, tongue compartment, or directly on the trailer frame β€” preferably in a protected location away from the motor. Heat and vibration from the motor degrade the electronics over time. Keep the receiver away from hydraulic lines and anywhere it could be struck by the bed in motion.

  2. Mount Both Antennas Outside Any Metal Enclosure

This is the most common installation mistake. Metal completely blocks both the Bluetooth and RF signals. Run both antenna cables through a rubber grommet in your mounting box wall so the antennas sit in open air outside the box. Mount as high as practical on the tongue or frame for maximum range. The gold antenna serves the app; the silver antenna serves the key fob. Both must be outside metal for either to work.

  3. Connect Red Wire to Battery Positive

Connect the red wire to the positive terminal of the dump trailer battery, or to the terminal on the start solenoid that connects to the battery's positive cable. The inline 15-amp fuse on the red wire is your overcurrent protection β€” if the KWR stops working suddenly, check this fuse first before replacing any other component.

  4. Connect Black Wire to Motor Ground

Connect the black wire to the negative (ground) terminal on the DC motor body β€” not to the trailer frame. KTI's instruction: the power unit must be grounded directly to the battery negative terminal, and the KWR black wire shares this same ground point. A poor or frame-only ground is the most frequent cause of erratic KWR operation, false signals, and low-voltage symptoms even when the battery is fully charged.

  5. Connect the HPU Connector to the Pump

Disconnect the wired hand pendant from the pump's remote pendant port. Plug the KWR's HPU connector wire into that same port. KWR-005/006/008: 4-pin connector. KWR-007: 6-pin connector. If you want to keep the wired pendant available as a backup, plug it into the receptacle connector port (the shorter 14" wire from the KWR marked "A" in the manual). The pendant stays active even when the KWR is in sleep mode.

  6. Power On and Test the Key Fob

Flip the power on/off switch on the side of the receiver to ON. The LED should begin flashing green every 3–5 seconds β€” this confirms power is above 9V. Test each button on the key fob with the trailer in a safe, open position. Each button press should hold the LED solid while pressed. Verify each function (raise, lower, and gravity down if equipped) operates the pump correctly.

Receiver LED Status Guide

Flashing Green β€” every 3–5 seconds
ON, voltage above 9V. Normal standby.
Flashing Red β€” every 3–5 seconds
ON, but battery voltage is below 9V. Key fob still works; Bluetooth app will not function below 9V.
Solid Green β€” while button held
Receiving a valid signal, activating the pump.
Flashing Red β€” during key fob pairing
Receiver is in programming mode, waiting for a key fob signal.
No LED
Receiver is OFF, or battery is below 8.5V (minimum operating voltage β€” unit will not power on below this).
20-Minute Auto Shutoff

The KWR powers itself off after 20 minutes of inactivity to protect the trailer battery. To wake it: press both buttons on the key fob simultaneously. The wired pendant (if connected) remains active during sleep mode β€” you can always lower the bed manually even after the KWR has timed out.

Part 2 β€” Key Fob Pairing (New or Replacement Fob)

Each receiver stores up to 4 key fobs. If you're adding a second fob, replacing a lost one, or setting up a new receiver from scratch, use this procedure:

  1. Disconnect the Wired Pendant

Unplug the wired hand pendant from the receiver before entering programming mode. Accidental button presses during pairing can actuate the pump unexpectedly.

  2. Enter Key Fob Programming Mode

Press and hold the small key fob pairing button on the receiver (labeled "F" on the KWR diagram) until the LED switches from flashing green to flashing red. Flashing red = programming mode active. You have a 3–5 second window to press the key fob. If the window expires, the receiver exits programming mode automatically β€” just press the pairing button again.

  3. Press Any Button on the Key Fob

Within the 3–5 second window, press any button on the key fob you want to pair. The LED will flash green for 2 seconds confirming the fob signal was stored, then return to flashing red β€” ready to accept another fob if needed. Repeat for each additional fob (up to 4 total).

  4. Exit Programming Mode

Press the pairing button again to exit programming mode. The LED will return to flashing green. Reconnect the wired pendant. Test the newly paired fob to confirm it controls the pump correctly.

⚠ 5th Fob Overwrites the 1st

The receiver holds a maximum of 4 fobs. Programming a 5th automatically removes the oldest stored fob. If you need to remove a specific lost fob from memory (security), you must clear all fobs and re-pair only the ones you have. See our KWR fob pairing and memory clear guide.

Part 3 β€” Bluetooth App Download and Pairing

The KTI KWR Bluetooth App is a free app from KTI Hydraulics Inc. It works with KWR-005, KWR-006, KWR-007, and KWR-008.

⚠ Check Your Serial Number Format Before Using the App

The app works with receivers that have a serial number in the format KWR##-MMDD#### (example: KWR05-01152024). Older receivers with a KTI##### format serial number may not connect β€” email KTI at info@ktihydraulicsinc.com for support on older units.

  1. Grant Permissions on Your Phone

When you first open the app, grant both Bluetooth and Location permissions. Both are required β€” the app uses Location to scan for nearby Bluetooth devices, not to track you. On iPhone: Settings β†’ KTI KWR Bluetooth App β†’ enable Bluetooth and Location. On Android: grant all permissions when prompted at first launch.

  2. Power On the KWR β€” Green LED Required

The KWR receiver must be powered on and showing a green flashing LED. The Bluetooth app is disabled when battery voltage is below 9V β€” if the LED is flashing red, charge the battery first. The app will not connect to a low-voltage receiver by design.

  3. Remove Any Existing System-Level Bluetooth Pairing

If you previously paired the KWR through your phone's system Bluetooth settings (not through the app), go to your phone's Bluetooth settings, find the KWR device, and tap "Forget Device" before using the app. System-level pairing conflicts with the in-app connection and is the most common cause of app connection failures.

  4. Scan for the Receiver

Open the KTI KWR Bluetooth app and tap the scan button. Your receiver will appear in the list identified by its device number, which is printed on a sticker on the receiver. If no devices appear: confirm the receiver is on (green LED), you're within 30 feet with no metal obstructions between you and the Bluetooth antenna, and both Bluetooth and Location permissions are granted.

  5. Enter the Pairing Password: 123456

When prompted, enter 123456 (factory default for all KWR units). Tap Connect. The app will display the control panel with your function buttons and a live battery voltage readout β€” one of the key advantages of using the app over the key fob alone.

  6. Test All Functions

Test each function from the app with the trailer safely positioned. Monitor the battery voltage reading β€” above 11.5V under load is normal; below 11V under load suggests the battery should be charged or replaced before a work day. If Bluetooth pairing fails, turn the KWR unit OFF and back ON using the side switch, then repeat the scan.

Phone App and Key Fob β€” Only One at a Time

Only one controller can operate the pump at any given moment. To switch from key fob to app: open the app and wait 5 seconds after the last key fob button press. To switch from app to key fob: exit the app's control panel first. The KWR-006 and KWR-007 app panels show "Power In," "Power Out," and "Gravity Down" buttons that correspond to those models' 3 and 4-function key fobs.

Model-Specific Notes

KWR-005 β€” The Most Common Dump Trailer Controller

Two functions: Power Up and Power Down. Plugs into the 4-pin port on all standard KTI double-acting pumps. If your dump trailer came with a 2-button wired pendant (the KTI 395-55 style), the KWR-005 plugs into the same connector on the pump. The wired pendant can stay connected to the KWR as a backup.

KWR-006 β€” For Single Double-Acting Circuits (DC26-Type)

Three functions: Power Out, Power In, and Gravity Down. Designed for pumps like the DC26-S where the bed is raised under power (Power Out), lowered under power (Power In), or dropped by gravity with just the solenoid opening (Gravity Down). The 4-pin connector is the same as the KWR-005. If your pump has a 3-button wired pendant, the KWR-006 is the wireless equivalent.

KWR-007 β€” 4-Function, 6-Pin Connector

Four functions across two circuits: Up/Down for cylinder 1 and Out/In for cylinder 2. Uses a 6-pin connector β€” will not fit the 4-pin port on single-circuit pumps. Used with dual double-acting pumps that control two separate cylinders (for example, a dump body and a tailgate cylinder). Verify your pump has a 6-pin remote port before ordering the KWR-007.

KWR-008 β€” Double-Acting with Gravity Down Option

Three functions: Power Up, Power Down, and Gravity Down. The 4-pin connector is the same as the KWR-005. Use the KWR-008 instead of the KWR-005 when you want the option to drop the bed by gravity (without running the motor) β€” useful for extending motor life on frequent dumps. Gravity Down on the KWR-008 opens the solenoid valve without activating the pump, so the bed drops at the speed set by the flow control valve.

Frequently Asked Questions

My key fob works but the app won't connect. Why?
Three causes cover almost every case: (1) Battery is below 9V β€” check the LED; red flashing means no app. (2) Both Bluetooth AND Location permissions must be granted β€” many people miss Location. (3) The KWR is paired in your phone's system Bluetooth settings β€” go forget it there and let the app manage the connection. If none of these apply, power cycle the receiver and try again.
The KWR turns on but the range is very short β€” only a few feet. What's wrong?
The antennas are almost certainly inside a metal enclosure. Metal completely blocks the RF and Bluetooth signals. Even a thin steel toolbox wall cuts range to near zero. Move both antennas outside the box β€” run them through a grommet in the wall. This is the cause of nearly every short-range complaint.
My KWR-005 worked fine but now it won't power on at all.
Check the 15-amp inline fuse on the red wire β€” that's the first thing to check whenever the KWR stops working suddenly. A voltage spike from the pump motor can blow it. Replace with a 15-amp automotive blade fuse. Also verify battery voltage is above 8.5V β€” below that the receiver will not power on at all regardless of the fuse condition.
Can I use a KWR-008 on my pump that currently has a KWR-005?
Yes β€” if your pump uses a 4-pin connector and is a double-acting circuit, the KWR-008 is a direct swap for the KWR-005. You gain the Gravity Down function. The pump must support gravity down (i.e., have a gravity-down solenoid circuit) for that button to have any effect.
Does the KWR work with non-KTI hydraulic pumps?
The KWR is designed and warranted for use with KTI hydraulic power units only. It may physically connect to other pump brands if the connector matches, but KTI does not support this configuration. For non-KTI pumps, contact the pump manufacturer for compatible wireless options.
